Teaching in Memphis

If you would have asked me last year what my life would be like now I am sure I would not have thought it would be this challenging. I set out on an adventure to the south to teach. I was accepted by Teach For America, a national non-profit that recruits top graduating seniors from all over the nation and places them in under resourced inner city and rural schools. I was sent to Memphis, TN where I teach 5th grade science and social studies to 65 crazy but lovable 10 year olds. I started this journey not knowing what to expect and that hasn't really changed. Every day I am faced with some situation that I have no idea how to handle and if I have learned anything it is that I am stronger than I ever thought I could be. Moving away from my home sweet home- SLC, UT away from every thing I knew, my family, friends, comfort zone in hopes to change the lives of at risk students.

I have been teaching for 11 weeks in Memphis City Schools, the 23rd largest district in America. With over 110,000 students and 8,000 teachers.
